The Fibers to Dye For line of kits and hand dyed silk threads are designed and dyed by local designer Amy Mitten.
Each kit contains a color photograph, chart, detailed stitch instructions, linen, Fibers to Dye For hand dyed silk threads, and a needle.
The Fibers to Dye For line of silk threads are carefully hand dyed to
create an antique patina for your reproduction samplers. The natural dyed silks of yesteryear,
although considered bright in their day, did not have the vibrant, clear colour of today's chemical dyed silks. The mordants used in the traditional dying process (such as iron, copper, or tin) tended
to tone down or mute the colours of the silks. The process of hand dyeing the silk threads adds further charm, giving a slightly uneven shading, as opposed to the strong colour differentiation of
variegated threads.
The Fibers to Dye For silk threads are appropriate for reproduction
samplers and any style of needlework, including needlepoint.
Amy Mitten has designed a band of the month sampler in the form of installments of a romantic mystery. The bands are in the style of the 17th century. Numerous
stitches are incorporated into the sampler including double running, montenegrin, cross, satin and
boullion knots to name a few. This would be an excellent project for a guild or group to take on together as well as an individual project. Please see below for more information.
