Sarah Stone created this bold and striking sampler in the year of 1678 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. It is one of a small number of 17th-century American samplers know that mirrored their English counterparts in design and embroidery techniques. The design is comprised of a series of bands of various contemporary needlework techniques that frame a broadly arched, central octagonal pattern. This surrounds a large central flower above a verse and date. Worked in silk on a linen ground, the design features horizontal bands that encompass stylized flowers, geometric shapes and the words:
That God in Mind/ Assuredly I know/ because My bless/ ed Jesus Made Him/ so Sarah Stone / 1678
The sampler kit is designed to be worked in a variety of reversible 17th century stitching techniques. Directions will also be given for a non-reversible approach to embroidering this design.
