Harriet’s monochrome sampler, although small, has left behind a wealth of information about the little girl who patiently plied her needle and thread on a small scrap of linen in South Wales some 172 years ago. The twelve-year-old Harriet stitched her sampler at Cardiff School finishing on Thursday, October 18, 1829.

Harriet was not born in Wales. We find her baptism recorded on Monday, May 15, 1837 in the parish of Kempsford in the county of Gloucestershire. The Gobey family, just like branches of Nicola and her husband’s family, migrated to Cardiff to work for the Marquess of Bute in expanding the dock.

Within the pdf download we follow Harriet from cradle to grave.

Harriet’s sampler has been stitched with #671 from Au Ver à Soie’s range of Soie 100.3. We have provided suggested conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC. There is no exact match in DMC; our suggested colour of #310, a hard black, is the closest.

    Stitch count is 143 W x 143 H.

Model was stitched on a 56 count hand dyed Zweigart based linen and stitched with Soie 100.3. We have suggested a few choices for hand dyed linens in different counts as well as a few thread choices.
