This sampler is brought to you as part of a series of “Little Gems” that are available only as a .pdf download by Hands Across the Sea Samplers.
This is an original design by Sandra which we have finished into a pin cushion. The little design would also be delightful as a framed sampler.
The phrase “Roses are red, violets are blue” can be traced as far back as 1590 and a work by Sir Edmund Spenser, “The Faerie Queen”, which features the lines:
It was upon a Sommers shynie day,
When Titan faire beams did display,
In a fresh fountaine, farre from all mens vew, …
She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew,
And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.
Appearing first in early spring, violets are known for their everlasting beauty. They attract all kinds of pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds, and some kinds of violets appear again in the late summer or early fall. Violets are most commonly associated with love and are the birth flower for the month of February. Nicola celebrates her birthday in February and her middle name is “Violetta”. She was named after her paternal grandmother Violet.

Spring Violets has been stitched with a palette of sixteen colours from DMC. We have provided a conversion for Soie 100.3 and d’Alger from Au Ver a Soie. We have also suggested a few different linen counts for you to choose from along with a few thread choices to stitch with. One skein of each thread colour is enough to complete this design.
The original sampler was stitched on 40ct Buttercream hand dyed linen from Lakeside Linens and stitched with DMC Cotton floss.
