A reproduction of a Netherlands sampler held in the QSD Collection. Includes Cross stitch and Double running stitch.
The 1717 Friesland 'letterdoek’, or letter cloth, is a spectacular embroidered sampler from northern Netherlands, west of Groningen.
It is difficult to say who our sampler maker was. There are a number of initials on the sampler. The typical Friesian sampler contains eight different alphabets.
The girls had to initial household linens and clothing; so best to have a choice from miniscule to elaborate illuminated letters. Laundry was sent out or laid out in the grass to dry. If you wanted it returned or not stolen, documenting with initials
was essential.
Stitch count is 248 H x 531 W. We are kitting this design with 46 count Lakeside Linens Vintage Maritime White hand dyed linen with Silk threads from Needlepoint Inc.
