This is an accurate reproduction of a Portuguese sampler held in the QSD Collection.
Queenstown Sampler Designs tells us: "Maria Jenuaria was 17 years old when she created her appealing sampler in 1833-1834. The sampler resembles a cast of characters in a play. The list of players include: Adam & Eve, ladies, gentlemen, children, soldiers, sailors and perhaps a pirate. They travel for your amusement by land in a carriage or by donkey, and then by sea in a ship. They appear to be every day folks falling in love. One lady is sitting in a chair, holding her key; perhaps the key to her heart. There is also a windmill, a three story house and an abundance of flowers. All surrounded by a border that is different on each side. Crowned double-curved hearts with the key to the heart of a young miss, expressing her love to her young man continues in Portugal today."
The stitch count is 357h x 447w. Cross stitch and eyelet stitch.
The model was stitched on 36 count Antique White Edinburgh linen using silk floss from Needlepoint Silk. A DMC conversion is included.
